(NS 7966 9321) Barrasyett (NR) (Site of)

OS 25" map (1966)

There are no visible remains of the Barras-Yett (or Gate) as the structure was demolished in 1770. The site has been marked on the roadway at the junction of Dumbarton Road, Port Street, and Upper Craigs. Ronald states that the original Barrasyett, first mentioned in 1522, was succeeded by a fortified gate, erected in the infancy of Queen Mary. From a plan of 1741 it appears to have been a building about 120' by 20', with a 10' or 12' wide archway, which was defended by a portcullis.
