(NS 8804 8314) Medieval Pottery Kiln (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map (1967)

In December 1953 and July 1959 the remains of some medieval pottery kilns were exposed by sand-pit and other working in a field about 300 yds N of Stenhouse. Sites of at least four kilns were located, the chambers of the best preserved examples having an average internal length of 6' 6". The study of the associated pottery is not yet complete, but a preliminary explanation suggests a 14th or 15th century date.

The kiln found in 1853 was sited to the above grid reference by Miss D M Hunter, Falkirk Museum (information from D M Hunter, 8 November 1955). RCAHMS 1963, visited 1959; The Scotsman, 13 August 1959

The site falls in a pasture field. No further information. Pottery in Falkirk Museum

NS 881 830 (centred on) Archaeological evaluation of a proposed housing development part of which lay directly adjacent to the pottery production centre of Stenhouse located the remains of a clay bonded structure which was sealed by an extensive dump of redware pottery. Other possible structural features were also located. Further excavation then took place.

Field Visit (July 1977)

Stenhouse NS 880 831 NS88SE 4

At least four pottery kilns of 14th-15th-century date were excavated on this site in 1953 and 1959; a corn-drying oven of post-medieval date was also found; the finds are in the Falkirk museum.

Excavation (8 May 2007 - 1 June 2007)

NS 8810 830 Archaeological evaluation of a proposed housing development, part of which lay directly adjacent to the pottery production centre of Stenhouse, was undertaken between 8 May-1 June 2007 and located the remains of a clay bonded structure which was sealed by an extensive dump of redware pottery. Other possible structural features were also located. Further excavation then took place which confirmed the presence of a Musty Type 2 pottery kiln similar to those excavated in the 1950s. Intriguingly, the kiln appeared never to have been fired and one of its opposed flues had been deliberately blocked. The traces of another robbed-out kiln and associated workshop structures were also excavated. A large assemblage of Scottish Redware pottery and kiln furniture was recovered.

Archive deposited with RCAHMS.
