Field Visit (20 May 1997)

NS89NW 41 centred on 8450 9725

The relatively steep, bracken- and gorse-covered slopes of the S face of the Ochils above the farmsteading of Lipney bear traces of cultivation. The remains comprise field banks, which, for the most part, run diagonally across the contours, and small plots on some of which short stretches of rigging, set either parallel or diagonal to the hill-slope, can be seen. Associated with the plots there are a number of clearance heaps, particularly towards the W end of the system, and what may be a short stretch of a trackway runs along the upslope side of one of the NW to SE field-banks. Amongst the plots, and post-dating them, there are the remains of at least two quarries. At NS 8458 9720 there are the remains of a stone-walled enclosure or building, and to the NE and SW of the water tank at NS 8460 9742 there are what may be building platforms for temporary structures associated with the construction of the tank (MENS97 75).
