Archaeology Notes

NS92NE 15 9589 2965.

NS 958 296. Air photography has revealed an oblong ditched settlement, in a low-lying field, 200m E of Longwell farmhouse. It is bounded by a ditch 4m in average width and measures about 90m by 80m over all. Internally, traces of circular timber houses of ring-groove type, and of a palisade running parallel to the ditch may be seen. There is a single entrance in the middle of the NE side; this gives access to an annexe- like extension of similar size, with an entrance in the middle of its NE side.

RCAHMS 1978, visited 1975

Centred NT 9580 2965. There is no surface evidence of this settlement cropmark which lies on the flood plain of the River Clyde at the foot of a steep slope to the NW. The area is intensively cultivated.

Activities

Watching Brief (May 1995 - April 1996)

NS92NE 15, NS92NE 16, NS 9502 2908 A watching brief took place during the erection of new overhead power lines between Symington and Abington, where the sites for new poles were seen to lie in the immediate vicinity of three unscheduled cropmarks (NMRS NS92NE 13, 15 and 16). Work took place between May 1995 and April 1996; no significant archaeological remains were encountered. The cropmark sites themselves were unaffected by the work.

Note (22 August 2014 - 23 May 2016)

Cropmarks have revealed two ditches drawn in an arc across a promontory formed where the Dingle burn cuts through the river terrace on the NW side of the River Clyde to the NE of Longwell. The ditches, which are about 3m in breadth, are set 20m apart and block the approach to the promontory from the NW and SW. The interior, which measures a maximum of 60m from N to S immediately to the rear of the inner ditch by 45m transversely (0.15ha), is featureless. The position of the entrance is uncertain but is probably along one of the margins of the promontory.
