(NS 9873 8120) Supposed site of Castle Lyon (NR)
OS 6" map, (1913)
This is said to be the site of Castle Lyon, the dower house of Lady Margaret Lyon, daughter of Lord Glamis, and widow of John, first Marquis of Hamilton. Nothing of it now remains, the furnaces of Kinneil Iron Works occupying the site. The farmer of Upper Kinneil (Mr Rutherford, Upper Kinneil) stated that c. 1805, portions of the Castle Garden Wall, remains of houses and other indications of this castle were extant, but were removed when the iron works was built. It is so long since this castle has been demolished, that it is impossible to ascertain its site with any degree of accuracy.
It is mentioned as "Craglyoune" in 1473.
(This site is shown in the water on Blaeu's map; the iron works occupy an area of reclaimed land).
