Archaeology Notes

NT08NE 93 centred 0927 8747.

During recent excavations in the High Street, at the corner of New Row, the almost intact remains of a kiln were uncovered at considerable depth. The top of the kiln lay c. 2.0m beneath the roadway, while the kiln itself was about 1.0m high and 2.0m deep. It was recorded photographically by Mr John Edwards of Dunfermline Museum. An extract from Sasine, identifies the kiln as belonging to one Arrock's Smithy, which projected into the present widened High Street at this point, sometime before 1807.

R Gourlay and T Turner 1978.
