The Forth Road Bridge, when opened in 1964, was the 4th longest bridge span in the world and the longest span outwith the USA.
As it was a tremendous engineering achievement it is disappointing to see that the first professional mentioned in the text was the architect, who had very little input into the design of the bridge. One of the reasons it looks so aesthetically pleasing is because it has no architectural adornments. It was designed by Freeman Fox and Partners and Mott Hay and Anderson, both firms of Consulting Engineers. It was not designed by the architect Sir Gilbert Scott.
