(NT 1291 7842) The Palace or Covenanters' House (Name Book 1855) (parcel No.45 on OS 25" 1855, but not shown on OS 25" 1968) was two storeys high, with a tiled roof. There was, in 1926, a projecting stair-tower set in what had been a re-entrant angle. The lintel at the tower entrance was dated 1613. Another lintel, dated 1676, was inserted in the S end of the building. It was in this house that the Covenanter, Henry Hall of Haugh-head was shot by an excise officer in 1680, the building at that time being an inn. Thompson suggests that the alternative name of "The Palace" may arise from it occupying the site of the house erected for Queen Margaret, The Binks nearby forming a natural pier for the ferry across the Forth; it may also have been used as a resting-place for royalty in the early 17th century.
