Archaeology Notes

NT24NW 17 2351 4752

(NT 2351 4752) Cist found AD 1846 (NAT)

OS 6" map (1966)

No further details are known about the above, which first appeared in the 1908 Edition 6", so no record is in the Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB), compiled in 1856. However, Francis records that three cists were found "two or three years" before 1872, when gravel-digging in this field. They lay close together and the middle one contained a food vessel, donated to the National Museum of Antiquties of Scotland (NMAS Accession no: EE 7), which contained dust and bone fragments. Possibly both the OS and Francis refer to the same find, the date 1846 being erroneous, (1864 or 1866 being intended).

G G Francis 1875; J G Callander 1930; RCAHMS 1967.

No further information.
