(NT 2009 4005) Standing Stones (NR)

OS 6" map (1965)

The two standing stones on Sheriff Muir are set 7' apart and aligned N - S. The N Stone, 3' 9" high, is a four sided block, 3'9" N-S x 2'6" E-W. The S stone, 4'3" high, is of similar appearance and measures 3' square at ground level. No traces can now by seen of the other stones, noted by the OSA, each c.1' high, which were erected at regular distances on a curved line running E from the two surviving stones. Buchan and Paton note that "careful digging by three men (on 18 July 1921) brought nothing to light".

(Information from R W Feachem notebook 1958, 20)

OSA 1792; J W Buchan and H Paton 1927; RCAHMS 1967, visited 1958
