(Name: NT 2702 7603) Site of King James's Hospital (NR) (1614)

OS 6"map, Edinburghshire, 1st ed., (1853)

The site of an ancient building which was demolished in 1824 when the burial ground was being enlarged. This institution was founded by the church session of South Leith in 1614 and confirmed by a charter of James VI. The spot on which it stood is marked by the Scottish arms built into the wall of the churchyard. The only part remaining of this building is that portion of the wall which bounds the SE (sic: ? SW intended) corner of the churchyard.

Name Book 1852.

It is not possible to identify either the SE or SW corner of the present burial ground as belonging to King James's Hospital. There is no trace of the Scottish arms.

Visited by OS (B S) 27 November 1975.
