Buchanan's Grave (NR) (AD. 1582)

OS 1:1250 plan.

(NT 2564 7333) A modern plaque states "In this cemetery are deposited the remains of George Buchanan Scottish historian, one of the most distinguished reformer's of th 16th century.... ' Born 1506, Died at Edinburgh 28th Sept. 1582..." (It is possible that he was buried not at this actual spot, the wording on the plaque being vague on this point.) No further information obtained during field investigation or recording; not mentioned in RCAHMS volume.

Visited by OS (J D) 25 December 1953.

Publication Account (1951)

One of the first notabilities to be buried here was George Buchanan, whose funeral on 29th September, 1582, was attended by a great company of mourners. His " through-stane" which does not appear to have been inscribed, was raised and cleaned in 1701, but it had finally disappeared by the end of the century. The granite monument set up to his memory N.W. of the church is quite modern.
