Publication Account (1951)

100. Holyrood Brewery, 124 Canongate.

Immediately E. of Wilson's Court a substantial, oblong tenement of late 17th-century date presents. its side to the Canongate. Obviously once a building of some distinction, it now retains little that is of interest. The rubble front is five storeys high, but the top floor, which is surmounted by a cornice and battlements, is quite modern. The lower part of the S.W. corner was originally recessed beneath an encorbelment, probably to admit the passage of a forestair, but the cavity has been filled in. On the ground floor seven openings are traceable, four of them windows and the other three doorways. Above the traces of the second doorway from the W. a moulded cornice, which may be the surviving fragment of a string-course, supports an empty panel-space surmounted by a triangular pediment. which bears the date 1685 in the tympanum. On. each of the three original floors above were seven windows, of which four are still open on each tier.

Standing Building Recording (17 October 2019 - 19 September 2020)

AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by Northumberland Street Properties to undertake an historic building survey of 126 Canongate, Edinburgh in advance of renovation and development. The works have been completed as part of the planning consent (19/01404/FUL) and listed building consent (19/01405/FUL). The development will see the change of use of the building from an office building to form eleven commercially-managed short-term let apartments, alterations to the rear elevation and roof and the creation of a ground floor retail unit. No 126 Canongate dates to 1685 although was remodified internally in the 20th century, which included a complete internal strip out leaving only the external walls. A rear brick extension and stairwell was also added. The exterior of the building has retained its 17th century proportions and character, most notably its widely spaced windows, although was re-faced in render during the late 20th century works.
