Architecture Notes

ARCHITECT : Attributed to Thomas Hamilton 1827-30 (formerly Salisbury Cottage for William Cunningham, jeweller).

OWNER : Professor Renwick.

REFERENCE : Edinburgh Dean of Guild alterations:

No. 1 - Petition of Andrew Usher Esq, 27th August 1896 of Northfield - distiller.

"to form a new entrance from Dalkeith Road . . .to increase the size of the window in the South West room in the basement . . .to slop window for bathrooms and pantry, to alter and renew the plumber work . . .and to execute internal alterations.

Plans - in folio, bound by Leadbetter & Fairley, 17 Young Street, Edinburgh dated 14th August 1896.

viz. Ground plan, basement floor, ground floor, upper floor, sections and elevation to yard, elevation to Dalkeith Road.

No. 2 - Petition of Miss Burn Murdoch, 17th November 1898.

"Mrs Jane Binney Usher or Burn Murdoch, wife of William Gordon Burn Murdoch.

". . .to take down outhouses and erect new buildings of one storey in height to contain kitchen, new WC etc and erect new chimney stalk from present kitchen window into doorway to garden, slap out wall for dinner lift, remove present WC fireplace in pantry etc and raise . ..garden walls 3 ft . . ."

Plans signed John Gresham (?) Adams, 34 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh, November 1898.

Three sheets of elevations, sections and plans of additions plus a small amound of house.

No. 3 - Petition of same as above. 8th December 1898.

"to build a storey on the top of the new kitchen . . .now being constructed, to contain a bedroom and water closet and to make deviations on the kitchen and alterations on the present dressing & bathrooms.

No plans although reference is made to one - bound with:

No. 4 - Petition of same as No. 2. 12th October 1899.

". . .to take down part of East wall at entrance doorway and insert steel beams to carry the superstructure, to take down the iron railings and gate and stone pillars at front and litchen entrances and form new doorways and heighten the boundary wall.
