(NT 3731 6951) Earthworks (NR)
OS 6" map (1967)

First published as 'Intrenchments' in 1912; no further information was found during recording. The relevant Ordnance Survey Name Book [ONB] was destroyed by enemy action during the 1939-45 war.
(Undated) information in NMRS.

These earthworks are covered by a thick wood and vegetation making close inspection impossible. There is, however, at NT 3731 6955, a stone bearing the following inscription: These entrenchments were thrown up by the English before the Battle of Pinkle 10 Sep 1547 and afterwards made us of by Queen Mary 15 June 1567 (cf NT36NE 5).
Visited by OS (BS) 22 October 1975

RCAHMS aerial photographs show these earthworks to be part of an Iron Age fort; the 16th century reference is probably erroneous.
Information from IAM 15 January 1981.
