Standing Building Recording (18 June 2014 - 19 June 2014)
NT 36893 73226 A programme of historic building recording and evaluation was undertaken, 18–19 June 2014, on the site of Drummohr House, prior to redevelopment of the house and grounds. The house was built in the 1740s/1750s by the Dalrymple family as a replacement for an earlier house in the grounds. It was constructed as a three-bay, three-storey, neo-classical house in red sandstone with a central projecting centre bay and triangular pediment with bay windows to the side elevations. Later additions included a service wing, which was taken down and rebuilt in the early 19th century and heavily rebuilt and extended in the early 1880s. The house has largely been redundant for a number of years, although
throughout the 20th century it was used as a Passionists Monastery, an outbuilding for Loretto School at Musselburgh and a care home. It has largely been stripped of its furniture and in 2001 a dry rot problem caused more stripping out of the furnishings. However, some nice original/early features remain, including two marble fireplaces and the main grand
staircase. An evaluation was also undertaken on the site of the intended new houses within the grounds; however, no archaeological finds or features were identified.
