Archaeology Notes

NT45NE 20 4525 5840

2 sandstone slabs, one measuring about 16" x 8", the other about 12" x 11", and both about 4-6" deep, were found by Dr Moffat in 1988 while recording at the site of Soutra Hill medieval hospital (NT45NE 1).

The slabs, each of which bears a cup and 3 rings with radial groove from cup to stone edge, were found with cement adhering, which indicates that they had been built into a wall of the hospital, although probably moved from near the site with other local stones when the hospital was built.

Information from R W B Morris 20 October 1988; Dr Brian Moffat, 36 Hawthornvale, Edinburgh.
