Archaeology Notes

NT47NE 10 4861 7809.

A charter dated 11th Juy 1583 reserves the life rent of the mill at Ballencrieff to Francis Borthwick, and one dated 12th July 1621 speaks of the corn mill built by the late Francis Borthwick in connection with the mansion house of Ballencrieff.

J Anderson 1899

Mr Campbell the grieve at Ballencrieff indicated the site (NT 4861 7809) of a round horsemill of considerable age that was taken down some twenty years ago, but it could not be ascertained if this was the mill referred to by Anderson.

Visited by OS (RDL) 24 October 1962.
