(NT 4828 8436) St Patrick's Chapel (NR) (remains of)

OS 6" map (1968)

St Patrick's Chapel at the Black Rocks, which is known to have been in existence in the early part of the 16th century, was discovered and excavated some time ago, the entire building having been buried in sand and turfed over. It was located from an old estate plan.

W S Curr 1931

The remains of this chapel lie in an area excavated some 1.6m below the surrounding ground level and consist of a rectangular building of rubble masonry measuring 11.2m NE-SW by 5.5m. The walls are 0.6m thick and stand to a maximum height of 1.8m. In the SE wall is a doorway and the base of a window and there would appear to have been a window in each of the gables. The remains are in a fair condition.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 21 November 1962

No change to previous field report.

Visited by OS (SFS) 10 July 1975.

St Patrick's Chapel, known to have been in existence in the 16th century, lay covered by sand in the sand dunes north of Gullane until it was excavated at the beginning of this century. The walls can still be seen and are as described in by RCHAMS in 1962. There is a plantation of conifers on three sides of the chapel and tree roots are visible within the structure which may be undermining it.

Site recorded by GUARD during the Coastal Assessment Survey for Historic Scotland, 'The Firth of Forth from Dunbar to the Coast of Fife' 19th February 1996.
