(Area NT 5014 1437) On removing plaster from a wall of 15 Howegate, adjoining the Auld Kirkyard road, Mr Ritson found a cross under which was a stone ornamented at each end by a fleur de lys, next a space below, with a base of a double rounded stone - this was not an aumbry or piscina.
On Wood's plan of Hawick, 1824, Needle Street is shown running in to the back yard of 15 Howegate, and may represent a former right of way to St. Mary's Church. The site of these stones is shown on the map by a small building suggesting that there may have been a shrine or chantry on the road from The Loan through Fore Row and Needle Street to the church.
