(NT 5168 3976) Langshaw Tower (NR) (In Ruins)

OS 6" map (1924)

The building clearly shows two periods of construction. The earlier portion, lying to the W, dates from the late 16th century and is now fragmentary, while the E part an addition of the 17th century is in better case. The 16th century block has measured 43ft 8" from N to S by 21ft 8" from E to W. The wing, which extends in alignment with the N gable of the main block, measures 18ft 7" from E to W and 21ft 10" from N to S. The walls are of uncoursed whinrubble bedded in clay-mortar and built without quoins. The 17th century addition is an oblong block extending E from the aforementioned wing, and measures 21ft 10" from N to S by 25ft from E to W. The Tower was occupied until the 18th century when part of it was used as a village school.

RCAHMS 1956

The remains of this tower are described above. To the east and SE of the tower are the mutilated footings of a possible house and associated gardens or yards. The building measures 12 x 7m and the turf covered walls are 0.2 - 0.3m high.
