NT 5170 7388. Situated at the rear of the George Hotel in a small public garden is the Custom Stone of Haddington. The stone, dark in colour and rectangular in shape, is 0.9m long by 0.4m wide and 0.3m high. Beside it is a plaque with the following text:
Custom Stone of Haddington
This ancient stone was for centuries the seat of the Jacksman when petty customs were levied in the burgh.
The stone fomerly stood in the High Street at NT 5164 7386, where a circular formation of cobble stones marks the site. It was removed to its present site a few years ago (W W Dudgeon, Burgh Surveyor's Office).
