Archaeological Notes
NT58NW 26 c. 51 86.
The island of Elbottle (now known as Fidra - NT 51 86) was granted by William de Vaux to the Premonstratensian canons of Dryburgh and, about 1220, canons of that abbey were serving the church of St Nicholas there (see NT58NW 1). Lawrie (1905) calls this a 'cell', but that term exaggerates its status. About 1240, the foundation is specifically described as a 'chantry' (a somewhat unusual term in Scottish charters) in a charter providing for its termination on the island.
