Activities

Field Visit (12 June 1913)

225. Cairn, Herd's Hill, Faseny Water.

About 20 yards from the left or north bank of the Faseny Water, on a slight terrace at the foot of the very steep southern slope of Herd's Hill, almost opposite the Hare Cleugh and at an elevation of about 1000 feet above sea-level, is a small cairn of stones overgrown with heather, oval in shape, measuring 19 feet from north-west to south-east, 13 feet across and2 feet in height. On the summit a thin, flat slab 4 feet in height, 1 foot broad and 7 inches thick, has been set up on end and is supported by several boulders. This stone is said to have been in this position for 60 years at least, but, as it is not sunk into the cairn, it is probable that it was erected at a much later date than the cairn.

RCAHMS 1924, visited 12 June 1913.

Field Visit (30 April 1979)

NT66SW 6 6175 6218.

(Approx. NT 617 622) There is a small oval cairn about 25 yards from the N bank of the Faseny Water, on a slight terrace (about 1000ft OD) at the foot of the very steep S slope of Herd's Hill, almost opposite Hare Cleugh.

Composed of stones, overgrown with heather, it measures 19ft NW-SE by 13ft and 2ft in height. On the summit a thin, flat slab, 4ft by 1ft and 7ins thick, has been set up on end and is supported by several boulders. This stone is said to have been in this position for at least 60 years but, as it is not sunk into the cairn, it is probable that it was erected at a much later date than the cairn.

(RCAHMS 1924, visited 1913)

NT 6175 6218. This heather-covered cairn, as described by the RCAHMS, is built of large stones and earth. The The slab now lies beside the mound. Its low-lying position and crude construction suggest that it is unlikely to be a prehistoric cairn and that it is of doubtful archaeological significance.

Visited by OS (JRL) 30 April 1979.
