Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Records of the National Museum of Antiquities note the discovery of an Early Bronze Age axe-hammer in Kelso during the digging of foundations for Cooper and Co in Kelso in 1877.

The axe-hammer measures approximately 175mm by 50mm by 50mm and is described as being fashioned from 'greenstone'. This term covers a particular variety of hard dark-green volcanic rocks, such as some types of dolorite, basalts and diorites.
