Archaeology Notes

NT75SE 31 786 538.

In medieval times a bog covered the whole of the ground lying to the south of Murray Street (NT 786 538) and the only means of crossing that swamp was by a causeway at the foot of what is now Bridgend Hill. This causeway was guarded by a barmyken or fortified building standing on or near the site of the house now known as The Barniken.

W Renton 1978.
