The Monk's Well is one of three springs or wells which issue from the ground near Chapel Park, the field in which, some sources suggest, Wester Upsettlington Church once stood.
Now covered by a modern manhole cover, the well was turned into an ornamental landscape feature in the early nineteenth century by the proprietor of Ladykirk House.
The name 'Monk's Well' may have been given to the well in the nineteenth century, referring to the site of nearby Wester Upsettlington Church. However, it is possible that the name reflects an old ecclesiastical association. Documentary sources suggest that the well could have been a holy well, which would have formed a focus of veneration throughout the medieval period.
