Archaeology Notes

NX13NW 19 1067 3704.

Traditionally, the Gordons of Clanyard (Castle Clanyard - NX13NW 2) had a castle situated in Glen of the Hole (name: NX 106 368). It was located where there is a very deep hole, from which the glen derives its name, at the corner of a small garden, where there are some large trees.

Name Book 1848

The description of the site probably refers to the area centred at NX 1064 3704, although there is no trace of any structures, and no further information.

Visited by OS (DWR) 27 January 1972

There are no visible remains of the castle or tower-house which is said to have stood almost 120m SSE of High Clanyard farmhouse and to have been built for the Gordons of Clanyard.

Name Book; W Todd 1854; RCAHMS 1985, visited June 1984.
