Archaeology Notes

NX15NE 15 185 585.

According to local tradition a chapel stood where there is now a group of trees and faint traces of a building, turf-covered, between Glenluce Abbey (NX15NE 7) and the Back o' the Wa' farm.

R S G Anderson 1936

Enquiries at Back of the Wall farm proved negative and the MoW custodian at Glenluce Abbey could offer no information. Between the abbey and the farm there is only one tree, at approximately NX 1859 5852, but no trace of a building was seen at this spot.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 1 March 1968

There are no visible remains of what is said to have been a chapel, which stood on the haughland between Glenluce Abbey and Back of the Wall steading (NX 1877 5834). It has been suggested (Anderson 1936) that a cross-slab, bearing, 'an incised cross in outline and two holes cut through', which was incorporated into the masonry above the Abbey's chapter-house, may have come from this site. In the 17th century the Bishops of Galloway had a chapel within the abbey precincts but it is unclear whether this was the one at the Back of the Wall.
