Archaeology Notes

NX19NE 11 1850 9807.

Among the sandy knowes on the south side of the river, on the land where it is intended to build the new burgh of Girvan there is a little hillock or knowe "which is called Knock Oskin upon which the Head Courts of this Jurisdiction are kept and held and all the Vassals compear there and seems to retaine something of the ancient custom of our Nation that the King's Vassals were conveened in the field lyke a rendee vous of souldiers rather then in one house for ceremony and attendance".

W Macfarlane 1907

NX 1850 9807. The site is now marked by a modern pillar bearing the following inscription:-"Knockushion" (Hill of Justice) - From time immemorial the seat of the head- courts of the ancient jurisdiction of Carrick. King Robert the Bruce, Earl of Carrick, held court here and and granted charter to the Friars of Ayre". The rest of the inscription is weathered away. No mound is visible at the site.

Visited by OS (JLD) 6 October 1955

All semblance of a hillock has been lost to town development long since, and the memorial pillar was removed in about 1968 to the public gardens of Knockushion House, Knockushion Street (NX 1843 9801) and restored.
