Archaeology Notes

NX19NE 9 1870 9808.

(Area NX 187980) The Market Cross, simply a rude block of stone, stood in front of the parish church at the head of the Kirk Brae. There is a minute in the Council Records concerning the placing of it. Since burghal rights were not granted to Girvan until the late 17th century and were not acted upon until 1785 it is unlikely that the cross would be set up before that year.

R Lawson 1892; NSA 1845 (P McMaster)

There is now neither trace nor local knowledge of the Market Cross. The Kirk Brae is now known as Hamilton Street and the cross would have stood between the church and the crest of the brae, probably at NX 1870 9808 (J Gillespie, librarian, McKechnie Institute, Girvan).

Visited by OS (JLD) 6 October 1955

The council minutes record that on 18th May 1786 it was "agreed upon the spot to place the cross or throne of Girvan". Neither the form of the cross or its provenance is stated, but the church square was the obvious choice.
