Archaeology Notes

NX25SW 37 centred 2347 5197.

NX 233 521 - NX 238 518 Two fields at Auchenmalg have yielded a scatter of Mesolithic flints on or just below the 50' contour. No flints have been found below circa 35ft. High pyramidal cores with hollow bases are particularly prominent (A E Truckell 1963).

Mesolithic and probably Neolithic flints from Auchenmalg are in Dumfries Museum, (A E Truckell 1964) donated by Mr Cormack. The Mesolithic flints are of Larnian type (A E Truckell 1962).

J M Coles 1964.

Mr W F Cormack (Royal Bank Buildings, Lockerbie) indicated, on the OS 6", the approximate extent of the flint scatter which lies along the 50ft contour. The area, centred at NX 2347 5197 extends from NX 2321 5208 to NX 2366 5187. The finds are in Dumfries Museum, but are as yet unsorted (A E Truckell, curator).

Visited by OS (MJF) 20 May 1977.
