(NX 2152 9870) Camregan Castle (NR) (Remains of)

OS 6" map (1957)

The remains of a castle which appears to have been surrounded by a moat and is said to have been a residence of the Cathcart family, to whom it still belongs, since the 13th century, otherwise nothing is known of its history.

Name Book 1856

The site is a level platform above the Camregan Glen, defended on the west by the cliffs on the glen, on the north and NE by steep natural slopes, and on the SE by a deep ditch which cuts it off from the upper hillside. On the north side of the platform, about 4m below its edge, there is also a strong bank. The only obvious building remnant is the NW angle of a rectangular tower, 3m high and 1m thick, but a courtyard wall can be traced all round the upper perimeter of the platform and within it various foundations are recognisable.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 18 April 1959

The remains are in a generally poor and unstable condition tree roots having dislodged much wall footing, but the earthwork is sound and the structural outlines still traceable.

Visited by OS (JRL) 20 April 1977

Camregan Castle NX 215 987 NX29NW 4

A roughly rectangular platform has been formed on the NE edge of Camregan Glen, 350m SSW of Camregan. It is flanked on the SW by the steep sides of the glen and elsewhere by a broad ditch with a substantial external bank ( 10m thick and up to 5.2 high) on the NW and a low external bank (3m thick) on the SE. There are traces of a possible stone wall around the edge of the platform, and upon it there are the remains of up to three rectangular buildings, now largely reduced to their stone wall-footings, although one appears to incorporate a fragment of mortared masonry 1.6m long, 2.8m high and 0.8m thick. The castle is said to have been a residence of the Cathcart family from the 13th century, but the visible buildings are probably of later date.
