OS 6" map (1957)
On the summit of Mochrum Fell are the remains of a large cairn 66' in diameter, almost reduced to ground level. Near the centre is a large displaced slab recently fractured, partly resting on another two, one apparently in situ. To the S another large stone just protrudes from the debris. This cist is said to have been destroyed at a comparatively recent date by a bonfire placed on top of it.
RCAHMS 1912, visited 1911; D Phillips plan, undated
A cairn generally as described by RCAHMS. It measures 21.0m in diameter and is 0.8m high. There are several large slabs upon the cairn but no trace of a cist.
Phillips' plan will probably date from 1942 when the late Marquis of Bute excavated several cairns in this area. The Marquis's niece can offer no additional information (Miss Stuart, Old Place of Mochrum).
Surveyed at 1:10 000.
Visited by OS (BS) 5 July 1976.
