Shennanton Bridge (Old) [NAT]

OS GIS epoch 3.

(Location cited as NX 344 633). Shennanton Bridge: traditional two-arched stone bridge dating from the late 18th century, which carried the Dumfries-Portpatrick turnpike over the River Bladnoch. Now by-passed.

I Donnachie 1971.

(Location cited as NX 343 633). Shennanton Bridge: probably late 18th century. A 2-span, segmental-arched rubble bridge, now bypassed and decaying.

J R Hume 1976.

The old Shennanton Bridge, although no longer in use, is still intact. A double arch bridge, its military origin is debateable, the OS sources disagreeing, with ES (January 1976) considering it not to have been of military construction, whereas the Field Inspector (July 1976) describes it as a military bridge. Described as 'very old' in 1838, it was replaced by a bridge (NX36SW 14) at NX 3433 6319 on the new road.

Information from OS (ES) 30 January 1976.

Visited by OS July 1976.
