Archaeology Notes

NX65SE 46 6841 5082.

(Approx: NX 6841 5082) In the Stewartry Museum Kirkcudbright (register No. 3176) is preserved a glass linen smoother which seems to be of Viking type". It is 4 ins in diameter and 2 3/16 ins in height, and of a Norse type (predominantly 10th C).

It was found in 1902 when a trench was being cut for laying a gas pipe between Townend and Millburn, not far from the present position of the Stewartry Museum.

J G Scott 1956
