Archaeology Notes

NX67NE 3 6514 7911

Standing near the edge of Balmaclellan churchyard 60' W of the church (NX 6517 7912) is a rough uninscribed whinstone pillar which has the appearance of an ancient monument and is locally said to mark the grave of a witch. It is 4'6" high, 2' broad and 9" thick, tapering towards the top.

RCAHMS 1914, visited 1911

NX 6514 7911. This unmarked stone is generally as described. Although it has the appearance of a standing stone it is situated in the graveyard on what appears to be made up ground and was probably erected between 1851 and 1859 when the gravestones on either side were put up.

Visited by OS (JP) 29 May 1975.
