(NX 8802 8618) Lag Tower (NR)

(Remains of)

OS 6" map (1957)

Remains of an apparently 16th century tower 29 ft x 6 in by 25 ft, the ground floor walls, 5 ft 10 in, thick. There are three storeys above the basement, and a wheel- staircase rises to the right of the entrance, which is in the S wall. A wall runs for 38 ft from the NW angle and returns southwards 27 ft to an arched gateway 6 ft wider. Against the walls in the courtyard are traces of out-buildings.

RCAHMS 1920

Home of the Grierson family, the first authenticated record is of Gilbert in 14thc (P J Hamilton-Grierson 1916) and in a document of 1545 'John Greorsoun of the Lag' is mentioned (Reg Sec Sig Reg Scot).

(Undated) information in NMRS.

Lag Tower is generally as described. There is however no trace of an arched gateway.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (BS) 5 June 1975.
