Archaeology Notes

NX97NE 29 9742 7543.

In the river, nearly opposite to the town mills, was found a gold coin of about the circumference of a sixpence, and the thickness of a half-crown, bearing the inscription 'Augustus' round the impression of a Roman Head.

NSA 1845

An aureus of Augustus was found about 1790 in the Nith, nearly opposite the town mills.

J Davidson 1949

The description of a Roman 'aureus' is not to be mistaken. If the legend be really complete as it stands, the coin was probably one of the issues of Augustus himself.

G Macdonald 1918

Sited approximately to NX 9742 7543 from information above.
