Archaeology Notes

NX99SW 25 c. 934 905.

A Late Bronze Age socketed axe, found on Auchencairn Hill (NX 934 905) in 1859, which was in Thornhill Museum, was transferred to Dumfries Museum in 1965. It measures 4 5/8" x 2 1/2" across the cutting edge and is ornamented down each face by four slightly raised vertical ribs.

(Socketed axe of Sompting type). Single find. Socketed axe, smooth, green, scratch-marks. Length 119mm, mouth 26 x 30mm, cutting edge 63mm, weight 325 gms. Dumfries Museum 1965.679 (Thornhill 6).
