(NY 0697 6773) Cockpool Castle (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1957)

A ploughed down mound 90 ft across and 18 in high with encircling ditch 42 ft wide. The Manor of Cockpule was the seat of the Murrays from about 1320 to 1450 when they built Comlongon Castle.

R C Reid 1955

No trace of a castle or the mound was seen at the OS siting which lies in a relatively flat arable field. Reid is, in fact, describing a site at NY 0699 6766, which is a more likely one for the castle and where building debris has been found. The 'ditch' may represent the remains of a moat. This appears to be an OS siting error. Cockpool is the recognised spelling for the castle (Mr Drysdale, Cockpool, Clarencefield)

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (RD) 31 October 1967
