Archaeology Notes

NY08SE 25 c. 082 827

A hoard of of silver coins, apparently deposited about the end of Edward II's reign, were found in a 14th century pottery jar by a labourer filling in a sewage drain in Eastercroft Park, Lochmaben on 11th October 1904. Originally thought to be about 476 coins, some 447 were recovered (9 Alexander III, Edward I and 264 Edward II, also 12 foreign sterlings). An Alexander III penny from the hoard is in Dumfries Museum. G Macdonald 1905; A E Truckell 1963; J B Paul 1905

Eastercroft Park could not be located. Enquiries at the local council office revealed that the area centred at NY 082 827 is named Eastercroft. The penny is still is Dumfries Museum.

Visited by OS (RD) 21 June 1966

The remains of the container are in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS). The coins suggest a deposition date in the early 15th (sic) century.
