(NY 1261 7234) Moss Castle (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

Moss Castle, the original 15th c home of the Cokpule, or Cockpool, family, comprises an earthen rampart 5' - 9' high, shallow trench 32' wide with a mound above the counterscarp, with entrance on the E.

RCAHMS 1920; R C Reid 1955

The remains of this sub-circular work consist of a stony bank with an outer ditch and traces of a counterscarp bank. There is an entrance on the E. The interior is overgrown and there is no evidence of any buildings. This work occupies a non-defensive situation and is similar to many Iron Age settlements in the area. That it was later occupied by a 15th c building cannot be confirmed.

Resurveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (JP) 22 February 1973.

Listed as Southgate, settlement 350m N of... the earthwork remains of a later prehistoric settlement...'

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 29 August 2007.
