Archaeology Notes

NY39SE 11 3672 9003.

(Approx NY 368 900) The remains of a large, circular cairn lie some 50yds up the wooded glen above Sorbie road bridge, and on the N side of the path. Only a segment consisting of about a quarter of the original, and some 7ft in height, remains. It is said that a cist was found many years ago when the cairn was removed for road metal.

RCAHMS 1920; J and R Hyslop 1912

NY 3672 9003. The remains of a cairn, as described, in dense level woodland above Sorbie Burn. Its northern half has been completely robbed, but enough remains to suggest an original diameter of 20m with a height in excess of 3m. The cairn is known at nearby Sorbie farm, but there is no knowledge of a cist or finds from here.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (JRL) 28 September 1979

(Named Sorbie Bridge and location cited as NY 368 900). Situated on gently-sloping land, now overgrown with brushwood, and facing E towards the Ewes Water, the RCAHMS record only a quarter of the cairn surviving to a height of 7 ft (2.1m) in 1912; rather more can now be recognised and there may have been additions of clearance material since that date. A cist is said to have been found many years ago when road metalling material was being removed from the cairn.
