Archaeology Notes

NY59SW 19 c. 526 927.

(Approx NY 527 921) Brighouse with tower symbol on Ponts map of Liddesdale (1608).

(Undated) Information in NMRS.

The approximate location falls in an area of level pasture within a wide bend of the Liddle Water. Nothing significant is visible on the ground. The name Brighouse is known locally with reference to a building that traditionally stood by the Bridgehouse Burn in area NY 526 927, a fact confirmed by an 1816 estate map of Liddesdale held at Hawick Museum. This area is now forestry planted and nothing was seen during perambulation. Dr Robson (Hawick Museum) substantiates the former existence of a tower in this locality.

Visited by OS (JRL) 31 July 1979.
