Archaeology Notes

NY27NW 40 2192 7500 to 2000 7712. RR 1.

Formerly RR 7f.

No remains of the road are known between Merkland and Birrens (Roman Fort NY27NW 4). However, Roy shows a 'Roman way' for a mile SE of Birrens, and states that vestiges of the road were distinctly to be seen. His view is illustrated on his plates xxiv and xxv, which show the road passing the fort to the W through what might appear to be an annexe. This has been confirmed by air photographs. In June 1939 the track of what was apparently the road was visible from the air across the arable field W of the fort (NY 2185 7508 to NY 2170 7524) and in the same line through the field N of the lane from Birrens Lodge to Middlewhats. There it is parallel to the hedge on the W side of the field and at some 40 yds distance (NY 2170 7524 to NY 2155 7539). It may be presumed that the road continued on this line past the farm of Land and ascended Middlebie Hill (as shown by Roy). No remains are visible until the West Gill is passed, ploughing having destroyed all traces. However, OS 6-inch map, Dumfriesshire, 1st ed. (1862) shows 'ROMAN ROAD' from NY 2006 7708 to sheet edge at NY 2000 7712 and on to NY 1882 7817. Prolongation of this line southwards passes through Birrens, which lends support to the view that the Roman road took a direct course over Middlebie Hill.
