Accessing Scotland's Past Project

A rectangular structure shown on the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of Banffshire may represent the remains of a stock enclosure. The 1971 1:10,000 map shows a subdivision running across the structure. This may have been a later modification to the enclosure, or may indicate that the structure in fact represents the remains of a rectangular building which had an adjoining enclosure attached.

Archaeology Notes

NJ10NE 9 centred 1678 0936

A sheepfold is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Banffshire 1872, sheet xlvi). The sheepfold is shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1971).

Information from RCAMHS (DE) 18 August 1998

Examination of the OS 6-inch map (Banffshire 1872, sheet xlvi) by the First Edition Survey Project identified the enclosure, but it is not annotated as a sheepfold.

The enclosure is subdivided, as shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1971).

Information from RCAHMS (SAH), 22 February 1999
