BATTLEFIELD

Cathcart Road drops again from the shoulder of the Mount Florida drumlin towards Battlefield. Battlefield suburb is a late development on part of Langside estate, replacing an older weaving village with tenements spreading downhill to the River Cart. In 1775, Dr Thomas Brown, while residing at Aitkenhead House, became a partner in the Ship Bank. The next year he purchased 49 hectares (120 acres) of land at Langside and erected a mansion. By the mid-19th century there was a village of 20 to 30 weaving families, redeveloped in 1895 as Battlefield. In 1852, Dr Brown's grandson sold Langside to Neale Thomson, proprietor of the adjoining Camphill estate. Thomson feued land for cottages and villas, Camphill later becoming part of Queen's Park. Development was stimulated by the opening of Langside Station on the Cathcart Circle Railway and then the electric trams.
