Archaeology Notes

HP50SW 5 5378 0425.

A standing stone, 4'2" high, 2'10" broad, and varying from 18" to 6" in thickness, formerly stood close to the burn of Forse (HP 537 042) and on the common-land or Garths of Papal.

J T Irvine 1887

It was of pot-stone such as is found at low tide between Tanga of Papal and the boat 'noust' of that place. In one corner were the initials 'H.I. 1674' and 'M.W. 1683' with an old merchant's mark of something of that description. The late Dr Hunt of the Anthropological Society dug under it in 1865 with the result that it fell, and it was eventually broken up for building material for the new school-house (HU 537 041) There is a tradition that a queen who came in a ship to Papal, died there and was buried beneath this stone.

RCAHMS 1946.

According to Mr Tulloch, this stone stood at approximately HP 5380 0427. There is now no trace.

Visited by OS (N B K) 8 May 1969; Information from Mr T Tulloch, G O Gutcher, Yell.
