Site recorded by Maritime Fife during the Coastal Assessment Survey for Historic Scotland, Fife Ness to Newburgh 1996

NO 632 095 Archaeological monitoring and recording were undertaken in connection with the laying of a new sewer pipe across Craighead Golf Course towards the new outfall at Kilminning. The line of the pipe crossed part of the Scheduled airfield at Balcomie (NMRS NO61SW 16) and the Scheduled Danes Dyke (NMRS NO61SW 15) to the NE. The pipe was to be drilled through underneath the dyke. In connection with this work an area of 4 x 8m was stripped of topsoil on either side of the dyke. No features were recorded on the W side of the dyke, but two parallel rows of post-holes were exposed in the northern half of the trench on the E side of the dyke, possibly part of a structure pre-dating the dyke. No finds were retrieved from these features. A corridor, 7 x 270m, was stripped of topsoil across the airfield from Kilminning. No significant archaeological features were uncovered in this trench.

Full details lodged with the NMRS.

Sponsor: Crail Golfing Society.

M Dalland 2001

This pre-fabricated steel observation post is not an Allan Williams pillbox turret. It is non-revolving, constructed in segmented sections and is carefully placed for coast watching. It is one of three on Balcomie Golf Course.
